In the last few years, many experiments have been done to try and find new ways to conserve money spent on gas. Recent tests have shown that using detonation nanodiamonds in lubricants can increase the number of miles per gallon of gasoline on a car. Detonation Nanodiamonds (DND) are created by a high temperature explosion. These nanodiamonds are then added into certain oils. When inside the car, the diamonds not only lubricate the motor parts , but rub down and clean the different surfaces. Oils with the nanodiamonds added showed a significant improvement in many characteristics of the lubricants as opposed to oil without the diamonds. These characteristics include friction coefficient, extreme pressure failure load and the diameter of the wear spot. Properties that were improved by the nanodiamonds included the antifriction and antiwear of the surface. These improvements show that using these types of nanodiamonds with the right type of lubricant can significantly increase the mpg of a vehicle, and save thousands of dollars on the gas budget. Different tests have shown up to an 8% increase in fuel economy.
The procedure for using these nanodiamonds is simple, but important in order to get the best results.
- Change oil in device (transmission or engine)
- Run device until oil is properly warmed (It is better to add the additive to warm industrial oil)
- Add additive
- Run device again for good mixing (for engine oil - approximately 20 miles)
Effect of decreased fuel consumption was observed after 1-2 tank fills.
It is expected that improved performance in rare gears will be also observed in time, so let the additive "work out" to improve the performance.
In a lab, we see decrease of coefficient of friction by 15-30% with this additive.
